What this means for you.

To become a Canadian citizen, you must have been physically present in Canada as a permanent resident for at least 1,095 days (3 years) out of the last 5 years before you apply. Time spent in Canada before PR can count for half-credit, up to 365 days.

Applicants between 18 and 54 must take a citizenship test and prove their English or French ability with a recognized language test or qualifying education.

Canada allows dual or multiple citizenship. Whether your other country allows it depends on its own laws — we ask you to confirm before applying.

Wait. Filing without meeting the physical presence requirement leads to an automatic refusal and a wasted fee. We give you the earliest safe filing date at your consultation.

Minor children of Canadian citizens or applicants can apply for citizenship at the same time. The forms and fees are different, and the physical presence rules are relaxed for minors.
